It’s not always necessary to take a flight across the pond to enjoy great jazz. One of today’s best soul-jazz singers comes from Europe! Sicily-born Mario Biondi is going to swing Straubing this summer.
Biondi was born in 1971 into a musical family. His father, himself a singer/songwriter, introduced his son to r’n’b and soul music from an early age. Biondi junior, a singer with the hoarse and sonorous voice, debuted in 2006 with his soul jazz record “A Handful Of Soul” and proved his skills as a passionate and empathetic singer. Biondi convinced critics and fans with songs like the Henry-Mancini-Classic “Slow Hot Wind” or the Broadway-Hit “On A Clear Day”. The title track “A Handful of Soul” is vocal jazz at its best – in the style of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett.
For the music world, it is the ideal case, that Mario Biondi fell in love with Rhythm & Blues and Soul singers like Earth Wind & Fire, Donny Hattaway, Aretha Franklin, Billy Paul, Luther Vandross, Lou Rawls, Eryka Badu and Will Dowin early in life. As his heroes music forms the ideal basis for his voice.
However Biondi does not only manage to interpret these famous songs in a new but still credible style. In collaboration with arranger Allessandro Magnanini (Was-A-Bee) he recorded two real gems. The ravishing “No Mercy For Me” or “This Is What You Are”. “This Is What You Are” charted successfully and was released on several compilations. British DJ Norman Jay declared the song one of his favourites in his BBC radio show “Giant 45”; RadioMonteCarlo (RMC) played the tune in his entire broadcasting area. Later the song even became RMC’s theme song in a TV ad. Another track is “Never Die”, which was written by Marco Bianchi – a piece of vocal jazz with fascinating harmonies and captivating soli.
However on his Album Biondi also pays tribute to blues rock, blues soul und r’n’b. “I Can’t Keep From Crying Sometime” by Al Kooper and L.C. Cook’s “No Trouble On The Mountain” are two further songs benefiting from Biondis unique voice. His versions of “A Child Runs Free” and Randy Crawford’s “Rio De Janeiro Blue” complete the record with songs in a modern Bossa Nova style.
Each of Mario Biondi’s songs is a reason to attend his live-performance in Straubing.
